Sharing Stories.
Transforming Lives.
Together, As One.
Imagine a world where the voices of marginalized youth from remote communities are amplified, their stories are shared, and their dreams are realized. A place where the way they see the world, their story, is the focus, and that their experience, their art has the power to change their community in ways they never had dreamed of. That’s the power of the Ngarra project. We are a nonprofit project dedicated to empowering youth through the transformative medium of photography and storytelling. By providing cameras, education, and support, we enable these young artists to capture their unique perspectives and share their stories with the world. But it doesn’t stop there. Through exhibitions and cultural exchanges, we create connections, understanding, and reconciliation, with 100% of the sales of their work being reinvested into their community, allowing young people to be an active part in their community, and showing both them, and the world, how sustainable business when paired with indigenous knowledge systems and ways of knowing have the power to save the world.
NGARRA is much more than just a project; it’s a movement of togetherness, cultural preservation, and global change.
Join us in, together as one, as ngarra, in making a difference one frame at a time.
sharing Story. Changing Lives.
How does it work? The project follows a simple yet impactful approach: Ngarra enters a community and takes part in an immersive workshop program, providing cameras, education, guidance and space, enabling the community members (usually young people and children under 16) to tell their stories through the lens of a camera. The objective is not just to share photographs but to empower these young people, to provide them with the platform to share their story with a global community, to foster cultural respect, understanding, and reconciliation through art, storytelling, connection and lore.
The photographs and stories captured are then showcased in exhibitions held in galleries across cities worldwide. We then ensuring that 100% of the profits generated from these exhibitions, and the digital gallery spaces, are directly invested into the communities that produced the work, partnering with grassroots organizations to ensure ongoing, sustainable support. It is this support can serve as a catalyst for positive change, addressing various needs within the community, such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, or preservation of cultural heritage, all at the hands of the youth of the community.
By sharing their work on a global scale, Ngarra’s projects initiate broader conversations, transcending boundaries of country, language, and belief systems. The profound impact lies in opening minds and hearts, fostering understanding, and promoting collaboration across different cultures and communities.
Indigenous knowledge holds a significance beyond the information it imparts; it embodies a way of knowing and coming to knowing. Ngarra recognizes the importance of working in ngarra, together as one, collaborating in relation to appropriately share stories, lore, and ancient wisdom and knowledge systems from diverse corners of the world, with the aim of bringing everyone back under the law the land.
Through the medium of photography, Ngarra is both a physical, and digital campfire that we invite the world to sit around, to hear the stories of people still living in harmony with nature, with bridging the gap between traditional wisdom and contemporary society. By doing so, the project aims to restore people’s connection with the land and facilitate their role as custodial species of the planet — strengthening our collective responsibility to protect and nurture the environment.
